Below are some terms that are important to understand about Unemployment Compensation Management
Underemployed; The employer reduces employees hours due to a reduction in staff of a lack of work. If the claimant requested reduced hours, they are not underemployed and should not be entitled to unemployment benefits.
Qualifying week: Any calendar week within the base period for which the claimant earned or was paid wages, regardless of the amount paid for covered employment for any number of employees.
Average weekly wage: The unemployment Bureau determines a claimants average weekly wage by dividing the number of qualifying weeks an individual worker within the base period by the total gross wages that were reported by all the employer's during the base period. The "Average Weekly Wage" must meet a set of requirements amount. the amount changes each calendar year and varies from state to state. All claimants in the state of Ohio must have an "Average Weekly Wage" of at least $215 gross to establish an unemployment claim.
If you are a school, this term is mainly used for you. Reasonable Assurance of Employment; If the school district does not offer the claimant a contract each school term, then the claimant must have "reasonable assurance" that they will be employed the following academic term, if you do not want benefits to be charged to your account during customary holiday/vacation periods (summer, winter or spring break).
So how can you qualify for claims?
Every individual that wishes to file an unemployment claim must first qualify to establish a claim. Individuals who are totally or partially unemployed must meet the following criteria:
- Be unemployed or underemployed at the time the claim is filed
- Have at least twenty (20) weeks covered employment within the base period
- Have an average weekly wage of at least $215 gross
- Be able and available to work
- Be actively seeking work
